I recently went to an excellent two-day course on lean quality assurance presented by Tom and Kai Gilb at the London BCS headquarters. The emphasis was on implementing quality as early as possible in the process, and in as lean a method as possible, so that by the time it hits formal test execution, the risk of faults is significantly reduced. I wrote a blog (website link) that summarised the two-days.

Nice summary, it is interesting to look back over the past 12+ years and see how many testers' jobs and attitudes have changed with agile.

I'd add to your observations of the test manager's role that one key role test managers play now is to lead a testing Community of Practice in organizations where testers are now part of cross-functional teams. It's important for practitioners interested in testing to be able to get together, share ideas and experiences, and learn from each other.

Rosie, thanks for the important posting.

I think the tester must think about the consumers all the time, this is a part of our job. For example, I test Health Care medical applications and sick people who will use the applications all the time in front of me.
I do not familiar with marketing, but of course good marketing is very important for application success.
This should not be so easy to combine so many roles, I think.

This is a great idea! There's a wealth of resources for budding developers but little for young QA types. I've attempted to run an informal program for my oldest children, starting in high school, to prep them for initial jobs in the SW QA field, including basics in SW development. It sure beats flipping burgers.

You should always consider that user can run OS, instead of English lanuage, i.e., Cyrillic, language group. This is common problem for tons of installers.

You must pay extra attention to OS language and related bugs.
